FROM A CONFUSED YOUNG GIRL TO A REPUTED FEMALE STONEMASON: THE LAURA WOOD STORY

Laura Wood was perhaps one confused girl not long ago. She had a blank expression on her face thinking about her future and what she wanted to pursue professionally. But just like in a strike the girl saw her coming in the form of her father’s stonemason business.

Always having a good flair for drawing, her father told her to join him on his latest project and give some designing help. The work to be done was perhaps the refurbishing of an airfield memorial. Her task was fun, to simply do research and come up with drawings of crests and batches.

This would then be stamped onto black granite panels. Langham Parish Council had assigned Wood’s father with this project. What she looked at as a mere fun activity turned out to be a defining moment in her life. Her work was met with acclaim and appreciation from every corner.

She is now doing stonemasonry at Moulton College in Northampton and also works as a student at the family firm. Learning the tricks of the trade in a lightning fast manner her growth has been phenomenal. Being the seventh generation working in the field this doesn’t quite come as a surprise to her father who is beaming with pride and happiness.

The original images on the badges and crests she had worked on were old and not clearly visible. They would thus also break up making it even more difficult for the machines to produce “rubbers’. This is exactly where Laura’s talent came in more then handy and thus proving invaluable in the end.
